Just a year after it burst onto the scene, Jeep has already made a pretty substantial addition to its V6-powered Cherokee, which has proven to be an extremely popular seller so far for the brand, adding a new stop-start system for the midsize, off-road-ready CUV.

The addition of stop-start included a few aerodynamic tweaks to the Cherokee's polarizing body, resulting in a wallet-pleasing increase in fuel economy. According to the EPA, the front-drive, V6-powered Jeep will now return 21 miles per gallon in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, up from 19 city and 28 highway. Four-wheel-drive…

Among the multitude of models that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles announced as part of its five-year production plan in May was a plug-in hybrid version of the Town & Country minivan for sometime in 2016. However, according to the latest pronouncement from company CEO Sergio Marchionne, that timetable may have been moved forward quite a bit.

Marchionne told Automotive News at the Paris Motor Show that the PHEV minivan would now be launching in late 2015. That strategy does seem a bit confusing, though, because the next-gen platform for the T&C isn't supposed to hit the road until sometime in…

Is There About to be a Reemergence of the Dodge Viper?

In recent years, Dodge has seen a steady decline in interest towards its flagship muscle car, the Dodge Viper. The name alone is synonymous with the very best of American Muscle, and yet sales numbers indicate an extreme decline in interest towards the vehicle. Fret not, muscle fans, Dodge has a plan to right the ship, and so far it seems to be working. This plan is a simple one, reduce the price of the…

"We figured we'd take the best of both worlds." – Ralph Gilles.
The international makeup of the 2015 Jeep Renegade will serve as a template for cooperation within the newly formed Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Senior Vice President of Product Design Ralph Gilles said.

The Renegade is Jeep's first small crossover and the brand's attempt to lure new and younger buyers. It was designed in the United States, but is built in Italy on a Fiat platform shared with the 500L. Unlike the Fiat, though, it has two available four-wheel-drive systems, a familiar seven-slot grille and a pair of…

With its crazy 707 horsepower on tap and roughly $60,000 starting price, the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat has been one of the most talked about cars of the summer, maybe even the year. However, there's always been one lingering question about the behemoth that Dodge has waited to answer until now – its fuel economy. The EPA ratings for the muscle car are finally out, and the numbers are actually pretty impressive for a vehicle with this much power.

A 2015 Challenger Hellcat with the eight-speed automatic is rated at 22 miles per gallon highway, 13 mpg city…

Ram 3500 still best in class for towing

Ram-3500-2014-Web

Analysis by Bill Cawthon. Ram has confirmed that the Ram 3500 pickup still has a 30,000-pound towing capacity when tested under SAE’s J2807 standards.

Ford, which has, until now, avoided the SAE standard, is now saying that its claim of 31,200 pounds for the F-450 pickup also meets the standard, even when the 150 pounds of “customer-deletable” items, like the spare tire, jack and center console, are added back in.

This answers questions about towing capacities but fails to answer the question of who is best in Class 3 towing, because the F-450’s credentials as a…

Chassis cab upgrades

The 2015 Ram Chassis Cabs now boast an optional high-durability vinyl seat for severe duty cycles. This exclusive new Tradesman option, also available on Heavy Duty pickups,  comes with a “Ram Work Grade” tag.

Ram Chassis Cabs with the 6.4-liter Hemi engine can now be speed-limited to 60, 65, 70 and 77 mph, for higher fuel economy and safety (the National Fire Protection Association requires a 77 mph limit on its emergency vehicles). Diesel chassis cabs have had these optional limits since 2012; this is the first year for gasoline engines. Ram claims that GM and Ford’s gasoline-powered…

Cherokee V6 boosted by 1-2 mpg

start-stop system

The new stop-start system on Jeep Cherokee has helped to create a 1-2 mpg increase across the board. A Chrysler spokesman told Allpar, “While ESS itself doesn’t necessarily help with the highway fuel economy rating, some of the actions we did for continuous improvement and to enable ESS helped on the highway.”

EPA figures researched by “mentalicca” show that:

  • With front wheel drive, the V6 Cherokee rose from 19 city, 28 highway to 21 city, 29 highway, while combined mileage rose from 22 to 24 mpg.
  • With Active Drive I, the base AWD setup, EPA ratings rose by 1…

Cherokee adds stop-start, safety

Just one year old, the 2015 Jeep Cherokee has added a large number of optional features. First is the engine stop-start system (ESS) which Allpar predicted would arrive on the 3.2 V6 only.  It shuts off the engine, while leaving climate control and other key systems on at a stop; as we predicted, the engine restarts automatically when the driver releases the brake. (See our test of a similarly equipped BMW.)

Vehicles with stop-start systems have upgraded starters and associated equipment; Jeep has a longer-durability starter, in a stronger case, with stronger teeth, and a more robust solenoid. It…
