2015 Jeep Cherokee finds a bit more fuel mileage thanks to stop/start and aero tweaks

Just a year after it burst onto the scene, Jeep has already made a pretty substantial addition to its V6-powered Cherokee, which has proven to be an extremely popular seller so far for the brand, adding a new stop-start system for the midsize, off-road-ready CUV.

The addition of stop-start included a few aerodynamic tweaks to the Cherokee's polarizing body, resulting in a wallet-pleasing increase in fuel economy. Among the multitude of models that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles announced as part of its five-year production plan in May was a plug-in hybrid version of the Town & Country minivan for sometime in 2016. However, according to the latest pronouncement from company CEO Sergio Marchionne, that timetable may have been moved forward quite a bit.

Ram 3500 still best in class for towing

Analysis by Bill Cawthon. Ram has confirmed that the Ram 3500 pickup still has a 30,000-pound towing capacity when tested under SAE’s J2807 standards.

Ford, which has, until now, avoided the SAE standard, is now saying that its claim of 31,200 pounds for the F-450 pickup also meets the standard, even when the 150 pounds of “customer-deletable” items, like the spare tire, jack and center console, are added back in.

The 2015 Ram Chassis Cabs now boast an optional high-durability vinyl seat for severe duty cycles. This exclusive new Tradesman option, also available on Heavy Duty pickups,  comes with a “Ram Work Grade” tag.

The new stop-start system on Jeep Cherokee has helped to create a 1-2 mpg increase across the board. A Chrysler spokesman told Allpar, “While ESS itself doesn’t necessarily help with the highway fuel economy rating, some of the actions we did for continuous improvement and to enable ESS helped on the highway.”

EPA figures researched by “mentalicca” show that:

Cherokee adds stop-start, safety

Just one year old, the 2015 Jeep Cherokee has added a large number of optional features. First is the engine stop-start system (ESS) which Allpar predicted would arrive on the 3.2 V6 only.  It shuts off the engine, while leaving climate control and other key systems on at a stop; as we predicted, the engine restarts automatically when the driver releases the brake.
